Maybe you can help me with my (secondary) question, then? The one in regards to what will happen if I had set up a 2 drive RAID1 array, and 1 of those drives were to fail, would the secondary work or not? Would it allow me to put another drive in place of the failed drive? I'm concerned because of the fact a drive that should be an exact copy of the primary isn't readable if plugged in via USB.
RAID 1 on the 1-bay models is a special kind, called Q-RAID I beleive. I have never used it but this is how I think it works.

When using Q-RAID the external disk is kept an exact copy of the internal. This is different from when using an external disks for backup, where only the user data is backed up and the disk partitioning is different, as I explained in my previous post.

If the external disk fails it should be possible to just exchange it for a new one. If the internal disk fails the external should be moved internally, and a new disk added externally. I hope that someone will correct me if I have misunderstood the Q-RAID-concept.

Used R-linux to recover the 500+Gb of HD stuff I had.

Tested an indiviual file by copying it to my PC and trying to play it - Had no joy - VLC player just locks up :( . Looks like the files are corrupt....
Is there anything I can do to get them files working again? permissions or something?

Hi Zoomee,

Following is my advice. If the data previously works on TS-109II, please put the old HDD back to NAS and try to access the data as original way. If you encounter further problem to read the HDD by NAS, please fill the online support form to get support on NAS configuration.

I'm going to completely wipe the new HDD (containing my data) over the weekend.

I'm just wondering if this is a file permissions problem after restoring from r-linux

All *.MPG files read as file permission 666 rw-rw-rw-
is that correct? I thought 666 is for text files only? thanks in advance for any further advice.

By default, the AFP/SMB permission is 777 and 666 for folders and files.
That should be no problem to play the *.MPG files with 666 file permission.

Please follow the steps to backup data from old HDD to new HDD.

1. shutdown the NAS and unplung the old HDD
2. plunin the new HDD to NAS and power on the NAS
3. initialize the NAS with firmware v3.3.0 (download here)
4. use an external HDD enclosure contained with old HDD and plug into the NAS via USB port
5. Go to the web administrator > [Web File Manager] > Path [USB], find the original folders and copy them to the destination folders on NAS.

OK. I did the same thing that samosan is trying two months ago. I opted to try doing a q-raid to the 2tb drive (on 3.1.0 firmware). I've been running into some issues recently on my machine, so I'm going to get another 2TB drive and try these instructions instead. Some questions:
- will I run into any issues with my TS-109 Pro?
- can I use e-sata instead?
- can I backup my current user settings in the 3.1 firmware and load them into 3.3 or do I need to try again?
- for future backups, is it better to use q-raid or just rsync the data? I liked q-raid in the past due to the direct disk replacement.

@ sluggy

The TS-109 pro should work with the eSATA external storage. To restore the configuration from old version to a new version is not recommended as some of the features or columns on GUI might be different.

For backup purpose, the rsync will be adviced as if you delete the files by mistake, you can still keep the backup on external storage.

I put my old HDD in an external HDD enclosure and plugged into the NAS via a USB port, but I cannot see the external drive in Web File Manager. What do I need to do?

Hi pacific123,

Please go to [External Drive] > [External Storage Device], and check if the hard drive has been detected or not. If the HDD can be detected with correct model name, it can be the file system issue. You might need to backup data and reformat the HDD before using it. If not, it can be hardware issue or cable issue. You might need to check the external drive on PC or replace a storage enclosure.

It will also be advised to upgrade to firmware version 3.4.3 before further verification. Please let me know where the old HDD come from? PC or NAS? and what is the model name of the external storage drive?

I was on the same situation after upgrading from a 500GB HDD to 1TB HDD. Everything went fine trough the upgrade but could get the configuration backup to restore again successfully (Messed up folders, permissions, perpetual upgrade message, etc.). So I reverted to factory defaults and reloaded everything again (Shares, Users, Surveillance Station, qpkgs) from scratch. Then the real difficulties started to happen. I’m connected to my network using Wireless N, but transferring everything using an ext4 driver wasn’t going to cut it.

After extensive research trough the forums I had the Idea to delete all partitions on the Old HDD with the exception of the 3rd (400GB+) Partition. After connecting it to the NAS trough eSata connection, the HDD was readable as Ext4 and mountable. And started transferring everything using WinSCP to the new Shares.

BTW. The partitions deleted where around 500MB each.
