Network Backup

Post by tads »

Hi all.

There is a nice and free little rsync-utility outside, named: Ripcord.
See here:
http://www.ripcordbackup.com/Home.html

My problem:
I know, that there is a rsync-daemon running on every QNAP-share, but Ripcord connects using rsync over SSH. And SSH via LAN (internal) seems not to be supported on my QNAP TS-109 (FW 111 0837T), therefore my admin-password is not accepted ...??

Any solutions? I`m no unix-freak ...

We already supported SSH in rsync connection on TS-109.
But for the security reason, we made some change in the authentication method on rsync open source.
You can't use a standard rsync to connect to TS server, need to do some patch.
I think this is why your can not use ripcordbackup in TS-109.

May I know what would you like to do?
If you want to backup data, in TS-109, eSATA Q-RAID 1 is a very nice solution.
It is not just only backup your data, if your internal HDD crushed, the eSATA Q-RAID can also help you booting system without any problem.

Hi Kent.
I`m running on MacOSX Tiger and want to automatically backup my Mac(s) via LAN. I know, there are many more backup-utilities outside, which will suit this. But ripcord seems to be a very elegant method of doing this with unix-command rsync. How can i patch your changes of rsync-opensource?

Hi tads,

We can provide rsync patch code, however, I think it is no useful for the ripcord software.
I checked the software from the web site.
It doesn't provide source code, so we can't do any patch.
BTW, the software is still in beta, it might have bugs.
If you would like to backup important data, I suggest you don't use it.

Rsync patch??

Post by jongae »

Hi!

I have posted some questions about rsync under another topic. I'd be very interrested in that sorce code rsync patch... :)

Because I would also like to use my qnap as backup from my mac (and my linux) but I would like to use standard rsync.

I would also like to run an automated cron job to backup my QNAP over the net to a linux server with rsync, my friend doesn't have a QNAP (YET!!).. :)

Thanks for all your help!

This is very good news! I think alot of people into serious backup uses rsync, so hopefully this will increase your sales.

Just one question. Will this be supplied as a binay patch to rsync itself or will it be a firmware upgrade?

In my opinion the best option would be a firmware upgrade where you will have the option to "Enable standard rsync settings" or something similar.

Because as we all know rsync is a very powerful and effective piece of software!

*bump*
Just adding my vote:

I would love to see rsync functioning. I plan to use the TS-109 pro to automatically synchronize music folders on a couple of different systems (linux and Mac, primarily). Rsync is my method of choice.

Please publish the patch!

Thanks,
Dan

Me too!

I am also running MacOS I want to use a 209 for backup both locally and remotely. Ideally it should be possible to run both/either rsync and TimeMachine in a secure fashion without any manual steps.

Hi Kent,

I just reread this thread.

Do you mean to say that you will fix rsync on the TS-109 or that you intend to patch ripcord (or can't do it)?

I need to be able to maintain a backup of my Mac on the TS-109. It would be easiest to do this with something like rsync.

Do you have an idea of when rsync will work on the 109? I just purchased mine, and would like to solve this problem.

Thanks,
Dan

I'm not unix freak but I find this on the web

first test of backup with rsync

create file with text edit (only in text format, not rtf) : mybackup.sh

Code: Select all

#! /bin/sh
source="$HOME/library/Application Support/AddressBook"
cible="/Volumes/QHome/Backup/library/"
rapport="$HOME/scripts/rapport_nas.txt"

heures=$(date +%H)
minute=$(date +%M)
jour=$(date +%d)
mois=$(date +%m)

nom_backup=$(basename "${source}")

echo "" >> ~/scripts/rapport_nas.txt
echo "--------------------------------------------------" >> $rapport
echo 'Backup du dossier '$nom_backup 'du' $jour'/'$mois 'a' $heures'h'$minute >> $rapport
echo "--------------------------------------------------" >> $rapport

rsync -vrup --delete "${source}" "${cible}" >> $rapport
echo "" >> $rapport
echo "*****************************************************************" >> $rapport

exit 0
change the source & the cible & the log name

after with cronnix set your schedule with "mybackup.sh"

and it's fine...

last points :
mybackup.sh need to be executable...use chmod for it
volume : QHome need to be mounted

This looks good.

Did your OSX version of rsync work with rsync on the Qnap?
Thanks,

Whatever happened to the rsync patch?

The problem I'm having is that it seems that when you run the TS-209's rsync and try and connect to a remote rsyncd (without ssh) the local rsync chooses its own password no matter what you do. ie: no remote connection possible! I just found this thread and it seems promising...
