XBMC and original XBox

Post by patteng »

Will XBMC running on the original XBox be able to access media content kept on a QNAP 209? Has anybody tried it with the original XBox?

I know the 209 has twonky, but I like the interface and outputs available from XBMC.

For information on XBMC:

As I know XBMC get the media files through SAMBA, so it should work with TS-209.

Correct me if my answer is wrong please.

Thanks

Okay - looks like I am the bunny!

I have an Xbox running XBMC 2.0.1 (latest) and a TS-109.

v1.1.1 is buggy and kills SMB on PC as well as Xbox
v1.1.0 seems okay on PC, XBMC can now see the device, but XBMC can not read directories! So XBMC and TS-109 do not work together with SMB drives. They should, but they don't!

Hopefully QNAP releases software that SMB actually works soon.

Now off to find older software for TS-109. If anyone knows where I can find this then please let me know. I am keen to try older software with the TS-109 and XBMC.

Could it be the samba nameservice that is the problem here as well?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the update 1.1.2

This has improved the situation. PCs and XBMC can now browse directories quickly and easily.

There is still a problem though. When playing any video file from PC (I use Nero Showtime) or XBMC video playback stops anywhere from 10 seconds to about 10 minutes maximum. The playback needs to then be re-started. Not at all acceptable for watching a video.

So you have improved the situation, but it is not over yet. Still something more to do!

Or - close, but no cigar.

I am so far impressed on your speed of attension to these issues, so keep up the good work.

Regards

We have gone thru extensive testing before we release this beta firmware, this of course includes lots of media playback testing on our device. Would you please provide the file format and more details regarding this failure and so we can rebuild the problem you had here and try to help you.

I have converted all my DVDs to MP4 format using Nero Recode.

I have also a number of AVI files.

All files play okay from a shared directory on a XP machine to XBMC.
All files stop after some random time from the TS-109. No video file plays all the way through.

I will study the randomness. Maybe it is always at certain frames. I will check.

If you have some test files that are known okay from your end and you can put these on a torrent down load, then I am happy to check with these.

I currently use a DI-624+ router at the moment.

Hi StuT,

I'm thinking of getting a TS-109 and also have xbox/xbmc and will want to do what you are doing - so i hope you can sort this problem out.

I've read there is spin down problems where the drive spins down even when something is accessing it - maybe that is your problem?

Also are you using SMB to connect to the drive or upnp? I think xbmc supports that so maybe trying it?

good luck,

alan.

So is the problem with XBMC fixed?
If it still has problems its the only thing stoping me from purchasing a ts-209 over a different NAS.

Hi, Stuart
I have done the test by using the latest hot-fix(0928) at my home to play the video files via SMB on my XP PC. Concurrent 2 video stream (Real Video & AVI) went very well and smoothly at PC's CPU utilization rate at 68~7x% around. My client player is VLC.
Similar test is done in QNAP office by the XBMCed Xbox without any issue. We would like to clarify the issue asap and need your kind help.

Can you help to check the video file you have on hand?
Or I can share you some torrent that I have no problem to play with.

Cheers,
